From the first moment I stepped onto the podium to lead the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, it was clear to me that this is a very special place. The vitality of the Orchestra, the enthusiasm of its players and audiences, and its strong commitment to education and community engagement activities were immediately apparent … and I knew I wanted to be part of it.
Something else intrigued me, something that isn’t so apparent –namely, the enigma of New Jersey. In my research of this fine state,
I discovered (as many of you may already know) the impact its people have had on American history. While most are aware of Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and other major historical figures, you may not realize that New Jerseyans have also played–and continue to play–a prominent role in the world of musical composition. To shed light on this oversight, your NJSO is launching a multi-year exploration of symphonic works written by New Jersey composers, revealing the breadth and depth of musical styles and aural beauty that everyone should know and celebrate. I know you will be impressed with our New Jersey Roots Project. |

Another endeavor that will cover several seasons is a thematic expansion of the annual Winter Festival. Entitled “Man & Nature,” each festival year will focus on the ways nature has inspired composers and how this inspiration has manifested itself in their compositions. We open this exciting journey in January 2011, exploring the role that WATER, in all its various and powerful states, has aroused in the musical imagination.
While I look forward to sharing with you my passion and experience in symphonic music, as well as in music from operas and ballets, via our core classical programming, I am also thrilled to be leading performances in each of the Best of …, POPS and Family concert series in 2010–11.
I hope you will join me and the rest of the NJSO family for this exciting journey.
Warmly, |
