“It’s almost one of these pieces you could call perfect.” As first-time pairings evolve and stories of ideal romance are told, sparks may fly at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s concerts this weekend.

MUSICIAN INSIGHT

It is always interesting (to me, anyway) what is appropriate foul-weather wear for symphony musicians.
This past weekend, NJSO musicians were sporting a variety of rain gear on the way to our concerts. One wind player wore black Muck boots with his tails. Another (trumpet) had a different brand of boot with a short rain jacket over his tail coat. I had a tux shirt over jeans, carrying a suit bag which acted as a sail in the intense wind. Women were covered with long rain coats, hoods being held with the hand not holding their instruments, concert black tucked in here and there.
These differing strategies are similar in that, when the gear came off, our musicians were dressed to the height of formal fashion (perhaps 19th-Century fashion, with those crazy tails!) when on stage.
One colleague commented that, in times of foul weather we mostly behave like post-men and women. We are prepared to perform in any weather, and when on stage...we deliver! |
