MANAGER OF INDIVIDUAL GIVING
Reports To: Director of Development
SUMMARY
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks an outgoing creative professional to manage the Orchestra’s low- to mid-level individual fundraising initiatives (Symphony Friends) and support the major giving programs (Amadeus Circle and Trustee Giving). He/she will directly manage all aspects of the fundraising department’s direct mail and telefundraising programs, provide direction and support for a moves management program for these donors and personally manage a portfolio of current individual funders and prospects.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Direct Marketing
- Develop annual direct mail appeal schedule based upon historical achievements and annual goals, write and update copy, direct the development of new creative, manage direct mail printing and mail shop vendors, manage internal proofing process, pull donor and prospect lists from internal sources, and provide accurate and timely reporting on achievements of appeals.
Telefundraising
- Directly manage vendor, develop annual calling schedule based upon historical achievements and annual goals, maintain updated calling scripts, pull donor and prospect lists from internal sources, and provide accurate and timely reporting on achievements of appeals.
Donor Stewardship and Solicitation
- Directly steward and manage a pool of low- to mid-level donors through face-to-face stewardship and solicitations, personalized direct mail, and concert and event interactions to achieve stated revenue and donor interaction targets.
Other Areas of Focus
- Monitor the activity of Symphony Friends donors, prioritize donors via moves management systems and directly steward low-level donors.
- Provide donor research, as needed.
- Work with team to administer donor benefits.
- Attend concerts and events to steward and solicitor support from donors.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the impact of the NJSO’s programs, both artistic and educational, through first-hand observation of the programs and close professional relationships with other NJSO staff.
- Maintain annual program book insert appeal calendar, write and update copy, and work with team to produce pieces.
- Other duties, as assigned.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Excellent, demonstrable written and verbal communications skills (writing samples required)
- Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
- Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge (preferred but not mandatory)
KNOWLEDGE
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three to five years experience in a fund raising environment.
- Experience in an arts organization setting preferred.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Flexible schedule and ability to attend NJSO-related events on evenings and weekends throughout the state is required
- Knowledge of classical music a plus

DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE
Reports to: Sr. Director of Patron Relations
SUMMARY
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly organized and creative individual for a position in the heart of a busy and diverse development office. This position encompasses responsibilities in two areas—Patron Relations and support of the Major Gifts team.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Patron Relations
Manage patron stewardship and cultivation activities of the NJSO development department. Responsibilities include:
- Manage the fulfillment of donor recognition programs and benefits such as open rehearsal ticketing, invitations to cultivation and stewardship events and anniversary recognition.
- Maintain a database and reports of cultivation activity for donors.
- Working with the Manager of Patron Events, generate guest lists for donor cultivation and stewardship events such as receptions, luncheons, dinners, open rehearsals and galas.
- Assist with event attendee research
- Run weekly concert attendance reports.
- Ensure premier seating sections at concerts are filled.
- Administrative support for the development department as needed.
Major Gifts Support
Assist the Major Gifts team with the care and cultivation of individual donors. Responsibilities include:
- Work to acquire new individual donors, retain existing donors, and encourage higher levels of giving.
- Cultivate relationships with and solicit gifts from low- to mid-level individual donors.
- Support and execute the department’s fund raising strategies, plans, schedules and cultivation for individual donors.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite with proficiency in Excel and Word.
- Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred.
- Highly organized with great written and verbal communication skills.
- Outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working with people.
- Ability to multi-task and establish priorities amongst competing interests.
- Detail oriented and able to meet deadlines.
KNOWLEDGE
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of experience or equivalent combination of education/training and experience in a fundraising environment.

FALL COMMUNICATIONS & EXTERNAL AFFAIRS INTERN
Reports to: Communications and External Affairs Manager
SUMMARY
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s Department of Communications & External Affairs has an opening for an intern during the fall of 2010. The intern will report to the Communications & External Affairs Manager and will assume various responsibilities while working on special projects for the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
- researching media outlets—both statewide and national—to assess value to the NJSO and helping to initiate contact with potential reviewers, features writers and editors
- submitting NJSO events for the 2010–11 season to online calendar listings and other arts calendars
- examining past press coverage of the NJSO and creating filing system for hard copies of articles
- implementing new system for storing and identifying photos from NJSO events and concerts
- copyediting press releases, artist bios and other documents
- generating copy—short feature stories and news blurbs—for weekly one-page internal newsletter
- improving internal access to important information and photos by examining the office’s shared network drive and consolidating and simplifying shared folders
- exploring new media—eg. Internet, social media—possibilities and capabilities
- completing other projects as assigned

FALL GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN
Reports to: Art Director
SUMMARY
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly motivated intern to lend support to the Art Department in the areas of production and design. Work includes newspaper ads and collateral materials. The intern may be required to perform other tasks like gluing, mounting, cutting, copying and to participate in grassroots marketing efforts.
REQUIREMENTS
• Pursuing or completed a degree in Graphic Design AAS or BFA.
• Expert in Adobe Creative Suite CS3 software: Illustrator, In-Design, Photoshop.
• Mac Platform only.
• Familiarity with web production and web software a plus, but not required.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Must be responsible for own workload and able to meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently.

The Development Department of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly motivated intern to lend support to the Development Department in all areas of development, including donor relations, fundraising, database management and donor events. Intern will participate in preparing and maintaining the department’s donor relations and information management systems, and participate in weekly development meetings. The intern may be required to perform basic administrative tasks such as data entry using a high-end fundraising software and file management. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to interact positively with others in a team-oriented environment.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

SUMMARY
The Marketing Department of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly motivated intern to lend support to the Marketing Department in the areas of Subscriptions, Single Tickets and Group Sales. Intern will participate in marketing the NJSO’s student tickets program and a variety of other marketing campaigns and promotions. The intern may be required to perform basic administrative tasks such as data entry, perform basic analytical tasks and participate in grass roots marketing efforts. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
• Pursuing or completed a degree in Marketing, Arts Administration or an equivalent degree and/or experience. • Strong attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. • Excellent analytical ability. • Excellent writing and proofreading skills. • Ability to interact positively with others in a team-oriented environment. • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
