Established in 1990, the NJSO’s Greater Newark Youth Orchestras give all qualified middle- and high-school students—especially minority youth—the opportunity to study weekly with NJSO musicians and gain performance experience in an encouraging and motivating environment. The program is comprised of three separate ensembles (Youth Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Violin Ensemble) which perform two full concerts each year. Additionally, the Youth Orchestra performs a side-by-side concert with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
PROGRAM FEATURES

- Annual winter and spring performance opportunities
- Annual side-by-side concert at NJPAC with the NJSO (Youth Orchestra only)

“I love the moment on stage when we’re about to perform the concert. We’ve put so much time, work and rehearsal into learning everything, and it’s so exciting right when everything is about to start. It’s so fun sharing all of that with the audience.”
-Sonya, Greater Newark Chamber Orchestra violinist
“This has been the best program I
have ever been in. I love the people there, the conductor, everyone! The repertoire is excellent!”
-Rashad, Greater Newark Youth Orchestra cellist
“Being in this program helps young kids do things that they didn’t know they could do. The best is that it’s helped build my confidence. I learn a lot, but I have a lot of fun at the same time.”
- Antonio, Greater Newark Chamber Orchestra bassist
“[My daughter] definitely practices a lot more and a lot better. I can hear how much she’s grown musically as a result. She’s also developing stronger ensemble skills. She feels a real responsibility to the group to do her best.”
- Marlene, Greater Newark Violin Ensemble parent |
