LISE NADEAU HARMAN began her musical studies on the piano at the age of six. By age eight, she started harp lessons. Three years later, she was admitted to the Conservatoire de Musique in Quebec City, where she studied harp with Marcel Grandjany and piano with Guy Bourassa. During this time, she obtained a First Medal in solfege at the Conservatoire. At her graduation, she was awarded a First Prize with high distinction on the harp. The following year she received a Second Prize on the piano. After graduation, she was offered a scholarship from the Canadian Arts Council to further her studies in New York City.
Lise is a two-time winner of the Young Artist Competition, appearing as piano soloist with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Wifrid Pelletier. The following year she appeared again with the Quebec Symphony as harp soloist. In 1959, still in her teens, Ms. Harman was winner of the First International Harp Competition in Israel. Two years later, she gave her recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall.
Ms. Harman earned a Master's Degree in Performance from the Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Carlos Salzedo. She attended Boston University where she worked towards a Doctorate in Music.
Leopold Stokowski selected Ms. Nadeau to be Principal Harpist in his newly formed American Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for many years.
Under the auspices of Jeunesses Musicales, Lise Nadeau toured Canada extensively in solo harp recitals. She has also toured the United States alone, as well as with the Nadeau Quartet, an ensemble she formed with her three sisters. She has appeared as soloist with the Toronto Symphony, Montreal Symphony, Quebec Symphony, American Symphony and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Harman has accompanied many artists such as Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti and Marilyn Horne. She also appeared on PBS with Isaac Stern.
Lise Nadeau Harman is currently Principal Harpist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, a position she has held since 1973. |
